Break

I regret to inform that I will be taking a small break from Les Temps Nouveaux.  My life has been CRAZY with work, school, and all the happenings of the holidays right now.  I will be posting, but will not continue Tuesday Tips until my life has some kind of regularity.  Thanks for following and feel free to contact me with any questions! Love, Mary

Tuesday Tip!

I fell upon these You Tube channels a while back and I love them.  The Luxy sisters are two young entrepreneurs that started their own hair extension line.  They have a hair channel with different styling options and tips.  They also have a beauty channel that had makeup tutorials and outfits of the day.  Check them out!  Their extension line can be found HERE.

Tuesday Tip!

Halloween is right around the corner!  I usually don't pick my outfit out until the day of but this year my costume may involve silver face paint and aluminum foil (brownie points for anyone who can guess what I may be!)  Here are some make up ideas for pretty and scary halloween make up!

I <3 Lichtenstein. Pop Art make up #halloween
Pop Art....COMPLETELY AWESOME!  May be time consuming.  Check out a progression of make up application HERE.

Cat....very cute!

zipper face

Zipper face.  Seriousy, going to give me nightmares but is actually pretty easy to do.  The basic idea is glue a zipper on your face, paint it flesh tone, then use a dark red lipstick to paint in the middle.  Add vaseline for the shine effect and done!

Tuesday Tip!

Many women think false eyelashes are for celebrities and broadway, but anyone can wear false eyelashes.  I love using them on brides to give a natural, but defined eye.  Here are a couple tips for application!

COLOR
If you wear warm tones and nudes, get brown natural looking lashes.  A good example of natural looking false eyelashes is Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) on Glee.  She is using a half set (the outer lashes only), which gives a natural look of very flirty, long lashes.  If you want a bolder look or wear black eyeliner, buy black lashes.

COUNT
Lashes come in full sets, clumps, or individual lashes.  I would recommend the full set for beginners because individual lashes take time and skill to apply.

APPLICATION
1. Apply your eye makeup as normal, leaving your lash application for the last step.
2. Measure the lashes for your eye.  The lashes should start where your natural lashes begin and end half a centimeter or so before your natural lashes end.  If you put false lashes all the way to the end of your natural lashes, it creates a drooping effect.
3. Apply a THIN layer of eyelash glue (can be clear, black, or waterproof depending on your preference) to the eyelashes.
4. Place the eyelashes on top of your natural lashes as close to the lash line as possible. Hold in place for several seconds.
5.  Mascara is optional, but sometimes a coat after application can help blend your natural lashes with the false set.

VOILA!  Divalicious!

I buy most of my lashes from Sally Hansen, but they can be found at any beauty supply store.

Another Wedding!

Ok, so I am not racking in the bridal bookings, but I was very excited when Carol agreed to hiring me as her makeup artist for her wedding!  We were not able to do a consult due to distance, so I was a bit nervous about coming up with a plan.  As I sat in my bathroom and tried multiple looks out on myself, I had to keep reminding myself of my bride.  Carol was so laid back about the whole thing.  She didn't have any specific look she was requesting so I took my liberties.  I kept thinking natural! natural! natural!  Carol does not wear makeup on a regular basis, so false eyelashes and black eyeliner were not going to be in her look.  I settled on a look that was not too heavy and I let the eyeshadow do the work for me.  Picking an eyeshadow with a lot of different tones helps cut down on all the layering and shading needed to achieve the same look.  You can wear this color by itself, but it looks like several different shades.  An example is MAC eyeshadow in Woodwinked.  I also did a pink-based gloss to give a subtle look, but to also brighten up the eyes.  Success!! She seemed to really like it and she looked gorgeous!

The overall experience was relaxing.  I did her makeup upstairs next to a window, where we could overlook the setup that was taking place downstairs.  Its always nice to give the bride a little time away from the chaos.  I had so much fun at their wedding too!  It was a beautiful, small wedding at their gorgeous farm house overlooking fields of corn.  Amazing!

Beautiful Bride and Mother of Bride!

Tuesday......Video?

Les Temps Nouveaux expands to YouTube!
I had been toying with the idea of making a few videos because some techniques are hard to explain.  There are some great videos on YouTube, but I honestly can't stand listening to those people talk!  So, all my videos will be music only.  I had picked out two lovely songs to use and then YouTube squashed my dreams with their strict copyright laws.  I had to opt for the generic iMovie songs.  The video is actually the last half of a full length video I had made, but it was way to long.  So, I chopped it in half to make one video about applying your foundation and the second about winged eyeliner.  If you did not feel fulfilled with my post about winged eyeliner, check out the Tuesday tip VIDEO this week!  If people like the videos, I may make more so put in your requests now!  Disclaimer: My awful hair is due to no power and no hot water.

Business Cards Are In!

My friend, Rebecca, recently informed me about a great deal on business cards from Minted.  I paid $11.95 for 50 business cards, which I thought was a steal!  They are very nice quality and had a better selection of designs than VistaPrint.  I compared it to being the Vera Bradley of business cards because all the designs were very bright and modern.  My only regret is not putting my title (makeup artist) somewhere on there because that would have helped me get a MAC Pro card for MAC Cosmetics (gives you crazy discounts on their makeup and special products not available to the general public).

They just arrived today!  Check them out below!

Adorable box they came in!

So nice and neat!  25 cards fit in the box.

Tuesday Tip!

Following the trend of last week's post, I wanted to make women aware of the types of foundation that are available.  I just did makeup for an outdoor wedding and the main focus of the makeup was light enough to sweat through!  I know I did some tips about makeup on the beach, but what about a formal event?  You want to be able to sweat without feeling like your makeup is running off your face.

Tinted Moisturizer: Congratulations if you have a wonderful skin complexion!  You can get away with using tinted moisturizer as a base with a sheer mineral powder to finish the face.  I use tinted moisturizer as my everyday mixed with some concealer on my red areas and under my eyes.

Cream Liquid: This is my go-to foundation.  I mix it with a tinted moisturizer, which seems to give me enough coverage for a more formal occasion and be sweat-through proof.  My current regimen is a small pea-size of Pixi Tint and Conceal (no longer sold in this version, but now this version) and one pump of Chanel Pro Lumiere foundation.  I cover with Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil.

Cream Base: Very heavy.  This is usually only used for television or theater makeup, but may be useful to cover tattoos or dark birthmarks.

Spray Foundation: There are mixed feelings with makeup artists on this product.  It sounds easy to apply but isn't.  I would use it for body makeup more than facial makeup.  It tends to look dry.

Airbrush Foundation:  There is so much hype on airbrushing these days and many brides jump to airbrush makeup because even the word airbrush sounds tempting.  I love the outcome of airbrush makeup, but I think the same look can be achieved with the right foundation brush at half the cost.

Mousse Foundation: This foundation is relatively light and could probably be used during the summer too.  Most are silicone based, so I am not sure how they would do mixed with sweat.

The main tip for outdoor makeup is not too much powder.  If you are sweating, blot your face with a handkerchief or paper towel (toilet paper or tissue will leave pieces behind so beware!).  Don't add more makeup on top of sweat because it will cake.  Choose an oil-free foundation or something mixed with moisturizer so your skin can breathe!

Tuesday Tip!

Recently, I was asked about moisturizers.  Many women with oily skin, or women moisturizing in the middle of summer, find their skin feeling greasy most of the time.  There are several ways to avoid the greasy effect when moisturizing.

#1-If you have oily skin: Do you have problems with shine in the middle of the day?  You probably have oily skin.  Skip the moisturizer and use a primer!  Or if you are stubborn like me and feel the need to use a heavy moisturizer with sunscreen, use blotting pads in the middle of the day to dab off excess oil.

#2-If you have dry skin, but find your moisturizer leaves an oily sheen:  Use an oil-free moisturizer!  A great buy is Mac Oil Control Lotion.  This moisturizer is oil-free and dries to a matte finish leaving your skin fresh for makeup application or bare for a natural look.

#3 My skin feels oily any time of the year: Exfoliate!  If your skin is always feeling greasy, you may not be cleaning your skin well enough.  Use a good facial cleanser and exfoliate regularly (at least once a week).

What the Brush?!?

Ever been perusing the make up brush aisle and said "That brush looks great, but what the heck would I do with it?"  Here is a guide to the brushes that may look a bit odd at first.

Precision Sponge- Ok, technically not a brush.  The sponge is great for applying liquid foundation, cream blush, or concealer.  It gives an even application and reduces streaking sometimes left behind by foundation brushes.

Precision Sponge

Kabuki Brush- Is this for traveling?  It could be!  These brushes gained more awareness when Bare Minerals commercials used them to apply their products.  They are great for picking up loose powder and buffing it into the skin for an even, smooth application.

Classic Kabuki Brush #50

Fan Brush- This odd little thing is not for make up application at all!  It's actually used more like a broom for your face.  It helps "fan" away fall out (the eyeshadow that ends up on your cheek and not on your eyelid) from underneath the eyes.  I just use my big powder brush for this and it works just fine.

Pro Natural Fan Brush #43
Angled Brush- Mine's broken!  Oh wait, it's is supposed to be like that!  This angled brush is the same eyeliner brush you've been using to apply your liquid eyeliner, but it is angled for easier application.

The Big Gig

After Jessica graciously allowed me to do her make up for her engagement photos, she hired me for her wedding!  I was totally thrilled to get a big event like this even if I was still not charging for my services.  Due to my perfectionism, I do not want to charge until I am confident in my abilities.  Jessica offered my services to her bridal party and, to my surprise, six people jumped on the bandwagon!  Oh, I really had myself up a creek at that point.  No turning back now!  Jessica came over to my house with one of her bridesmaids a week before the wedding for her consult.  I was much more relaxed this time around, which was probably better for everyone.  The consult went rather smoothly and I did get through two different looks on each eye this time!  We decided on an overall look and everyone was so excited!  The lip color I had picked for her was a perfect fit!  Maybe practice does make perfect.

The night before the wedding I was probably as giddy as the bride.  I was pacing and knew I was rambling up a storm to Carrie (who did very well at not strangling me at any point during my manic phases).  Several thoughts were going through my head at this point.  Maybe I took on too many people?  Seven women was a lot for my first wedding!  What if I am slower than I planned for and run out of time?  Can I create six different looks with no preparation ahead of time?  I nabbed Carrie while she was relaxing on the couch and tried out a couple techniques that are still shaky.  They were all making her look slightly gothic and were not boosting my confidence in the least.  I went to bed hoping for the best.

I arrived at The Terrell House a couple minutes late; went in and set up my space.  They had a great small bedroom with a table and chair that was right next to the window.  I had been hoping for natural light because make up is always easiest to apply in natural light.  I met a few people and everyone was busy getting ready and going off to hair appointments, which I was glad about cause I didn't want to be the center of everyone's focus.  Ready (no), Set (wait!), GO!

Mother of the Bride: I have had the least practice with mature skin, so this was a challenge to start off with MOB, but in this scenario, you have to be able to roll with anything.  She was so kind and my nerves were not showing up in my voice.  She wasn't a big make up wearer, so I decided to take a lighter approach.  As I did her make up I tried to remember all my mature skin tips (not too much product, really really blend well, no harsh eyeliner, not too glossy on the lips).  The hardest part was mixing a custom lip color, but I think this is my knack because I mixed customs for almost every girl that day.

Aunt of the Bride: I have not had much experience doing makeup on women with blonde hair, so this was a challenge.  For some reason, my go to color combos don't work on blondes, but I think we achieved a great look!  She was specific in her needs, which helped me because requests are always easier to me than people saying "whatever you want".  She complimented my blog and I was so thankful!  Most times, it seems like I am talking to myself so whenever people say they enjoy certain posts I think I've done my job.

Bridesmaid #1: We did a little chatting about what kind of make up she wears everyday, which is helpful because I know how much or little I can do.  She had a request for a certain look and I was relieved because it wasn't overly complicated.  For some reason I had imagined people requesting ridiculous looks the night before (Amy Winehouse anyone?).  She had brought her own false eyelashes so I gave them a quick trim and we were done!  She looked really good!  Even I was impressed with myself.  Whew!

Bridesmaid #2 Dang! Another blonde.  Ok, moving on.  Things were definitely getting smoother and I didn't look or feel as nervous as the beginning of this session.  Pulling out a different look for each girl/woman wasn't as hard as I had imagined.  All went well!

Bridesmaid #3 I had been eyeing her beautiful red hair since the engagement party and already knew I wanted to do bright red lips.  Thankfully, she agreed to it!  She said she had only done red lips once and it wasn't full on RED.  Looking back, for as long as I had wanted to do red lips on her I didn't come with the supplies I should have ( lip liner, appropriate red for her shade).  If I had done better with the preparation, they would have lasted all night...alas...we got most of the night out of them so I was ok with it.  I custom mixed a red for her from my lipstick palette and I was super impressed.  She seemed to really like it too!  Score!

Bridesmaid #4 I knew this bridesmaid the best, so I was probably the most nervous.  What if she doesn't like it?  We know each other personally so I didn't know how she would feel about me being so into her personal space also.  People don't realize how vulnerable you have to be to have someone do your makeup.  Not only do they see you without any makeup on, but they are all up in your personal space.  She was very happy and very pleasant with which to work!  I was running behind so she ended up doing her mascara on her own, but came back to get a lip color picked out, which I took as a big compliment! (meaning she must have liked the rest of it and trusted me enough to not screw up the lip color)

Ok, need to admit something at this point in the day.  During Bridesmaid #4, I was starting to get VERY dizzy.  I had eaten some lunch and been drinking water, but maybe all the standing?  It was major dizziness mixed with a little nausea.  I am sure that no one there noticed anything, but I felt like crap....and who is left but the most important person THE BRIDE!!!  Somehow, I was able to push it to the back of my mind for the finale.

The Bride: Jess and I had a consult prior to this day, so I had my guide sheet ready to use.  The mistakes I had made or steps I had forgotten during the engagement session were fixed and I was ready!  As I went through putting on her makeup, I really felt great about the way it was turning out.  The bridesmaids would come in and ohh and ahhh every now and again and it was a lot of fun!  The photographer showed up and snapped a couple action shots.  I was really feeling like a professional!  I had really encouraged Jess to use the lip color that we did and I am so glad because she looked amazing!  We also used fake eyelashes and that was a good choice because her eyes stood out just the right amount.

After I packed up my stuff and got into my car, I felt awesome mentally and horrible physically.  I stopped on the way home to pick up a gatorade and laid on the couch until the wedding.  I guess five+ hours of standing on your feet and concentrating on fine details would make anyone feel like crap.  But, I did it and I was happy with my work and everyone was happy with their makeup.  Success!!

Check out the great pictures below!  Thanks to Maile for her great photography and Jess for letting me be a part of her wedding!

Tuesday Tip!

I love getting manicures!  I don't love getting in the car, waiting in line, watching the tech rush through my manicure to get to the other ten people in line, not being able to relax because of the noise level, trying to understand what the tech is asking me (true and you know it), and enduring the awful massage chair (I think they put bowling balls under some leather and call it a massage but it more feels like I am getting punched in the back for thirty minutes.

SO!  Here is the process for a DIY manicure (use same steps for pedicure but apply polish to toes).

Turn on some music!
Soak: Put warm soapy water in a bowl, add scented oils or anything that smells good. Rest for five minutes to soften cuticles.
Trim: Push your cuticles back and trim them up with cuticle trimmers.
Cut: Clip nails to desired length.
Shape: Use nail file to shape nails square or round (sharp points if you are Lady Gaga) using a back and forth motion, then buff the surface of the nail.  I bought a four sided buffer (buffs, shines, and files two different ways) from Walmart and I love it!
Moisturize: Rub a thick moisturizer (or any lotion you have on hand) on your hands and forearms and brush cuticle oil over your nails.  Relax for a few minutes.
Prep: Wash your hands to remove oils.
1st coat: One base coat.
2nd coat: One coat of your designated color.
3rd coat: Second coat of your designated color.
4th coat: Top coat.

All done!

Not so good at the painting part?  Try Sally Hansen Salon Effects.

Tuesday Tip!

Budget-Friendly Make Up Part DEUX!!

There are a lot of great companies out there for people on a budget.  Besides perusing the local cosmetics aisle, here are a few companies that fill your make up bag without emptying your bank account.  These posts may be due to the fact that I just took a HUGE dive in my income by going back to school.  Currently unemployed, I am doing a lot more browsing than buying.  There is one saying that comes to mind frequently these days, "This too shall pass"  and, WHEW, am I not looking for that lipstick-er-light at the end of the tunnel.

Sephora Brand Products
I have tried many Sephora products over the years, meaning the products made by Sephora (not the brands that are carried in their stores and also carry a hefty price tag with their brand name). My favorites from the Sephora line include Nano Eyeliner, which I have in a bunch of colors (Iced Brown, Pearl Beige, and Wild Spirit to name a few).  At $5 per pencil, you will love them too!

Coastal Scents
When I wanted to start doing make up professionally, I turned to this company to start my kit.  You can purchase a TON of make up for a small price if you want to start a business.  Once your biz picks up and turns a profit, you can switch to higher quality products.  My favorite from Coastal Scents are my eyeshadow palettes. Each palette contains 88 colors, which is a steal at $18.95.  The more palettes you buy, the more you save (I got four!).  My favorite palette has to be the Warm Palette because it is full of neutrals (browns and nudes), which I wear most often.  Each palette comes with matte (no shine or sparkle), satin (mild shine), or sparkle (high shine, visible sparkles seen in shadow) shades.  With every eyeshadow bought on a budget, I notice more fall out (product that falls down on your face instead of staying put on your eyelid) and a bit of a chalky texture to some colors.  Make sure to prep your eyelids with primer or foundation to avoid these two complications.

Sigma Beauty
I have bought many brushes from Sigma, all for a bargain.  Lately, I have been mad at my F30 (the large powder brush).  It was behaving for a long time and just started shedding like a cat in the middle of summer.  Bristles are everywhere when I am done applying my powder, even though I wash it regularly (washing usually solves a shedding brush problem).  All the other brushes I have bought have been great.  I own most of the eye brushes and my favorite is the E40 (Tapered Blending Brush) at $9.  In my honest opinion (despite how much I love these brushes), brushes may be one of the make up items you want to spend money on.  I am getting a new powder brush as soon as I can!  If you take care of your brushes, they could literally last a decade or more.  The brushes I have purchased from MAC have been heavenly.
Sigma came out with some eyeshadow palettes recently that have been compared to MAC eyeshadows in quality (which is a big compliment to Sigma).  Plus, the packaging is ADORABLE!

Ulta Cosmetics
I am not sure about any of the make up, but I love their nail polishes!  Anywhere from $2-$7.50, the colors are true to the color in the bottle (not the case for Urban Outfitters nail polish).  They even have a nail polish to make any color matte!  Matte nails are all the rage right now and you can use it over top of any brand of nail polish.  Comment if you have used any of Ulta's cosmetics and let me know what you think!

Products for a budget! (Part 1)

Recently, a friend asked me about E.L.F products, which got me thinking about all the products out there that are budget-friendly.  There is a lot of info so I have split this into parts.  Part 1 will review E.L.F only and Part 2 will talk about other budget-friendly products out there.

Personally, I do not own E.L.F products so I am getting information from others who have reviewed the products.  This is somewhat of a literature review if you will.  If you own any PLEASE comment on how you feel about them!

THE GOOD- These products were loved or at least highly liked by professionals and amateur artists.

Studio Conditioning Lip Balm SPF 15 ($3)- a lip conditioner that comes in several shades.  Reviews said the balm was soft and moisturizing with a good smell.

Studio Cream Blush ($6) and Studio Blush ($3)- Both of these blushes blend well and have good pigment.

False Eyelashes ($1-$3)- Natural looks or more bold styles with glitter.  They apply nicely, but do not use the glue that comes in the package, it dries out quickly and didn't have good reviews.

Studio Cream Eyeshadow ($3)- These little babies have been compared a lot to the Mac paint pots, which is a compliment to ELF.  They have very good pigment and can be used for a strong smokey eye look or under powder shadow as a base.

Mineral Lipstick ($5)- All the reviews talk about the creamy texture of these lipsticks.  The most talked about color is Natural Nymph, which is a very very nude lipstick (almost concealer color if you ask me).

Several other products were hit or miss, depending on who was doing the review.  Some products I will give a mention, but did not get 100% great reviews are Mineral Eyeshadow ($1), Eyebrow Treat and Tame ($3), Hypershine Lip Gloss ($1), and the Clarifying Pressed Powder ($1).

Other products that were hit or miss were the brushes.  The overall feeling I got was the bigger brushes (face and powder brushes) were better, while the eye brushes were too sparse.  Many people said the brushes shed a lot and didn't hold their shape or were too flimsy.

E.L.F products are available on the website and sometimes available at Target, Big Lots, and KMart.  Let me know if you have seen them anywhere else!

Tuesday Tip!

A new trend that is catching on like wildfire is feather extensions!  The feathers are placed in the hair with a metal clip and can easily be changed out.  The process is not damaging to the hair and you can get extensions for as little as $20 (prices vary based on feather type, amount, and salon).  Ask your local salon if they are participating!  The extensions can be treated like your normal hair; shampoo, blow dry, curl, etc. They last up to three months.
Go crazy or subtle, whatever your style may be.  Here are some ideas to browse!

Tuesday Tip!

Here is a tip for people who are just like me!

It is very easy to fall into a make up rut.  By that I mean you wear the same mascara and chap stick everyday and aren't branching out AT ALL.  I've been there, or rather, I may be there right now!  Whenever I need some inspiration, I go a click away.  There are so many people out there trying to teach you how to do make up or give you new looks.  Here are a few of my favorite video tutorials that never fail.

Another good point is that you don't need to buy new make up to get out of your rut.  You can use eyeshadows as eyeliners and vice versa.  You can use bronzer as blush and eyeshadow.  What about tinted chap stick as blush?  Try new things at home and then clean the house.  You will have time to get comfortable with your new fuchsia lips before you wear them to meet your friends for lunch.  The most important part is to have fun and don't get frustrated if you mess up, you can always wash your face and start again!
Here are a few links to great tutorials to break your routine!

Pin Your Interests

A friend recently introduced me to Pinterest, an awesome website that combines my favorite past time (surfing the net) with my second favorite past time (designing).

Check my page out here.

Pinterest allows you to create a page and link other people's pins to your boards.  You can create your own pins from Etsy, blogs, or other websites.  Other than being a beautiful website, you can find ideas for decorating, diy projects, style, landscapes, architecture, and food.

Tuesday Tip!

Anyone can wear red lipstick.  Here are a few tips for application!

Prep the area around your mouth by dabbing on a small amount of concealer.  This step will prevent the color bleeding into the lines around your lips.  Use a lip pencil or lipstick brush to line your natural lip line.  If using a lip pencil, fill in your lips to help the color stay put.  Apply your lipstick, preferably using a matte shade (more glossy means more bleeding).  If a glossy look is desired, apply a small amount of clear gloss to the center bottom lip.  A trick to avoid lipstick on your teeth is to put your finger in your mouth (act like you are eating icing off it!) and pull it straight out.  The lipstick that would be on your teeth comes off on your finger and you just wipe it clean!

Remember to downplay the eyes and blush.  A light pink blush and some mascara is great paired with red lips.  If you have light skin, pick reds with pink or plum undertones.  Women with darker skin can wear reds with brown undertones.  Unsure where you fall?  Ask the ladies at the counter to pick your shade.

Tuesday Tip!

There are certain techniques to applying blush to make it look natural.  I like using an angled brush, like the Mac 168 for powder blush and my fingers for cream blush.  Look into the mirror and smile.  Your angle should start at the center of the cheek bone at the apple of your cheeks (the part that puffs when you smile) and extend upwards below the temple.  When applying cream blush, place three small dots on the same angle evenly spaced apart and blend in a circular motion with your fingers. Brush a small amount on your nose and forehead for a glowing summer look.

For a different approach, apply a small amount to the apple of the cheek and blend out in a circular motion.  This technique yields more of a blushing look.

I Love Miniatures!!

I absolutely love sample-sized items because they fit easily in my professional kit and I can stuff them into that tiny plastic bag allowed on airplanes.  Mac has recently released a miniature skin line called Sized To Go. Now, all of their great skin care items can be purchases in minis priced between $10 to $15!  I'll definitely be picking up a few of these cuties!

Tuesday Tip!

Summer has been here for one week today!  Here are some of the latest trends you should try for 2011.

1. Bold Lips!  Burgundy, pink, and orange have been some of the most popular shades this year.  Try a bold color for a night out.  Too shy to reach for the hottest pink?  Try brightly colored gloss for a toned-down approach.

2. Full Lashes!  To make lashes look extra thick, try a mascara primer under your mascara.  You can also coat your lashes, let them dry, then add a second coat.  False eyelashes are a breeze and easy to apply!

3. Metallic Lids!  Use cream shadows for a darker look and eyeshadow or bronze powder for the daytime.

Taking the Mystery out of Mystic Tan

Carrie and I were headed up to Nags Head, NC for a week at the beach with my family.  With Carrie's recent bout of melanoma and ongoing battle with dyplastic cells (cells trying to turn into melanoma), we opted for a sunless sun tan!  We figured what better way to stay under the shade than to be tan BEFORE going to the beach!  I made two appointments and we arrived at H2O Salon and Spa the day before we left for Nags Head.

I had heard many things about mystic tanning and decided to try it when a coworker came to work with a gorgeous tan.  I asked if she had been on vacation and she told me about her mystic tan from H2O.  I had seen the aftermath of mystic-gone-wrong in college when my friends would point out their wrists and ankles streaked with awful orange patterns. But, this tan fooled me and I am not easily fooled ( I think...). Carrie and I had gotten an overwhelming amount of advice about how to prepare for a mystic tan.  Our prep was as follows:
1. Exfoliate as close to your appointment as possible. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to try the at-home sugar scrub (see Tuesday Tips).
2. Leave skin bare, meaning no make up or lotion.
3. Wear dark, loose fitting clothing.

We arrive at H20 salon and Carrie goes first.  She looked a little shaken afterwards but the whole process took her about ten minutes.  I head back to the mystic tan booth, which really looks like some kind of gas chamber, and get a brief lesson from the spa lady.  After donning weird sticky shoes and a hair net, I used a lotion on my hands, feet, elbows, and knees.  If I could go back, I would have used a lot more because they tell you use a thin layer.  Carrie slathered it on and avoided any awkward streaking marks.  I hop into the tanning booth, take a really deep breath, and hit the green button.

I was definitely NOT prepared for what came next.  The mystic sprayer was very loud AND forceful.  I had planned on holding my breath until the pause to turn around, but my anxiety had me gasping after ten seconds.  I am remembering about my battle with claustrophobia right about the time that the sprayer is hitting my face and the booth is filling up with a very thick cloud of tanning solution.  By the time the machine pauses, I can feel my heart beating out of my chest.  I turn and assume the awkward position of arms out and legs spread and the sprayer starts again.  Ughh! When is this thing going to turn off?!  After another 20 seconds or so, I am done and I race out of the booth.  I started wiping all the extra solution off with a towel and had to spit out everything that was in my mouth (maybe my mouth was open from the gasping breaths?).  The trick to an even tan is to wipe, not blot.  Whew!  I am dressed and heading out the door.  Six hours later, I take a shower, which is a relief because the smell of the tanning solution was giving me a headache.  The tan had completely set by the next morning and I loved it!  My only give away sign was my hands.  Somehow, my right hand turned out A LOT darker than my left.

While I won't be racing back to the spa any time soon, I did think the tan looked very natural.  My family thought I had been basking in the New Orleans sun all summer.  The color didn't fade until the very end of the trip and I avoided any unneccessary sun time!  Win-Win!

Tuesday Tip!

How do you tell if products are worth buying when you are in the store?

Eyeshadow- Place to eyeshadow on your finger tip and swipe once on the back of your hand.  If the pigment on your hand is not the same brilliance as the package, don't buy it.  You will end up putting on layers and layers to achieve the same look and end up with caking and creasing.

Mascara- If you want full lashes, look for a mascara with a thick applicator.  If you want more natural looking lashes, try a thinner applicator.  I have used around 15 different Sephora brands and find that the mascara is not the indicator, it is with what you are applying the mascara.

Blush- Use the same pigment tester as eyeshadow.  If you have fair skin, go for peaches and corals.  Medium skin should use deeper pinks or bronzy coppers.  Dark skin looks best with deep bronze or burgundy shades.  The darker the skin, the deeper the blush color.

Lipstick- Buy your lipstick from a place you can test it directly on your mouth (don't do this at Sephora because there are too many samples for the employees to keep up with proper sanitation).  If you can't do this, put the color on the back of your hand and hold it up to your mouth.  If the color looks good against your skin tone, it will look good on you.

Foundation- Test, test, and test again before you buy.  Any store or counter will give you free samples to take home and try.  Judge your foundation in low light, sun light, photo flash, or those awful bathroom lights that make everyone look like a corpse.  You will find what shade and finish you like the best.  Test the foundation all over the face, not just the hand (darker than your face) or the jaw (also darker than your face).

Eyeliner- This depends on the use.  Do you want a defined line or or soft, well blended line?  Are you using it on your lash line or your water line (the part of the lid on the underside of the lashes closest to your eye)?  Know what your intentions are before you walk into the store.
Defined lines-liquid or gel liner
Soft lines-Kohl pencil or eyeshadow
Lash line-most all will do
Waterline- Opthalmologist-tested and not waterproof

My Good Things Two

I have so many new products I have been excited about recently that I wanted to share them with everyone!  Who needs any excuse to buy more makeup?? Not me!  Here are a few products that made it to the top of my favs list!

1. Sally Hansen Salon Effects- This is literally the best thing since Reese's Nutrageous.  These nifty little stickers come in too many shades to count.  I discovered Salon Effects when a coworker showed me a picture of her hot pink glitter nails (in the photo, she was next to her dog who also had hot pink glitter nails).  I loved them!  They looked professional, but really were a do-it-yourself product!  I used Frock Star on my toenails and they looked like a professional pedicure for a fraction of the cost.  You can remove Salon Effects using nail polish.  Check out all the shades below!

2. Mac Pro Longwear-  On my search for a great lip stain (no luck yet), I ran across Longwear lipstick from Mac. I used Covergirl Outlast Smoothwear back in the day, which is the same concept.  The lip color is applied and dries to matte finish.  Lipgloss can be applied over the color because once the color sets, it can look dry on the lips.  I wore Mac Longwear for eight hours and the color lasted through eating and drinking all day!  Have good makeup remover on hand because removal can be a challenge.  I recommend Mac wipes.

3. Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum- Everyone knows how much I love Clinique products.  Honestly, I have a boatload of Clinique products at home and I keep getting more!  This new product is used to treat large pores.  Clinique has pore minimizing products, but they were designed to cover, not treat, the problem.  The new serum claims to shrink pores up to 58%, according to the clinical trials.  My girlfriend uses this product and it really worked for her!  Use in conjunction with Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips and exfoliation for maximum results.

4. Aveeno Sunscreen- I don't list a certain product for this favorite because I am in love with all Aveeno sunscreens.  Finally, a sunscreen that smells good, is hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic (won't clog pores), is oil free, and does not feel greasy!  What more can you ask for?! Oh wait! I am not even finished!  It also is waterproof and the new line can be applied on wet skin!  Oh, heaven.

 5. Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeshadow Pencil- Tiffany, a makeup artist I follow, always primes her eyes with a cream shadow before applying her powder eyeshadow.  Setting the eye with cream shadow allows for deeper pigments with powder shadows and longer wear time.  I bought the Urban Decay pencil in Sin, because she uses it most frequently and got a lot of compliments!

6. Sigma Beauty Makeup Brushes- After emptying my bank account at MAC buying brushes, I decided to do some research.  Sigma brushes are a fraction of the price and are very soft!  I do think they shed more than my MAC brushes, but frequent washing can cut down on all that hair.  You can buy individual brushes or get a deal on a whole set.

7. Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse- I love the entire Living Proof line actually.  Developed by a bunch of smarty pants at MIT, a new polymer was discovered to make you look fabulous.  If volume isn't what you are looking for, check out their anti-frizz or new straight line.  I have also used Full Thickening Cream and it works just as well.  Use the product on dry or wet hair.  Air dry or blow dry; both methods reveal a fabulous coiffe.

8. Gel Nails- I love getting professional manicures, but hate that first chip two or three days later.  For around $30, you can get a gel manicure.  Gel manicures use a type of nail lacquer that is set and hardened under UV light.  The gel sets so strong that the manicurist finishes your appointment with your massage.  You can reach in your purse and dig around for your wallet and keys as soon as the nails have set.  The manicure is also dubbed "the two week manicure", but I've had gel manicures last up to four weeks.  The cons of gel manicures is you have to return to the salon to soak off the polish in acetone, which dries out your nails.  It is not recommended to have gel manicures back to back.  Also, they are still unavailable for pedicures.  I like them because they are thicker than your natural nails but not as thick as acrylic.  It should also be noted that I picked ten crabs with these babies without a chip! (Note: not my nails below)

9. SunGuard- I mention SunGuard in a previous post, but it was worth revisiting.  This product is such a good idea!  You can use this product in your normal wash and it gives your clothes an SPF of 30!  SunGuard will last through twenty washes.                                                        SunGuard

10. Urban Decay Naked Palette- This is on the tippety top of my want list right now.  I love Urban Decay eyeshadows because they are highly pigmented like MAC eyeshadows.  This palette is a wonderful mix of matte and satin finishes and I wear natural and nude colors most often, so what better than to have them all in one location!  Here is a great tutorial by Tiffany D using the Naked Palette.  She didn't major in English, but she sure knows her make up!
